2015 Scholars Speak Series - Renee Pendarvis

Thank you so much for allowing me to go on the HBCU tour. It has really been life changing. Before the this tour, I didn't consider any HBCU because I was unsure of the quality of education I would receive. But reflecting on the colleges I saw along with the bonds amongst the students there I can honestly say I definitely want to attend an HBCU right when I graduate and move the PWI's under the HBCU's. I fell in love with the family atmosphere there and the energy I felt stepping on each freezing campus. Thank you so much for this opportunity, it would shape me for the better in my future. I am able to add Spelman College, Clark Atlanta University, Claflin University, Norfolk University, and Bennett College, to my dream school list to be ready for my application when I'm a senior next year. I definitely want to help out with the trip next year AND possibly be another student on tour again! Seeing the colleges once again and new colleges will definitely be beneficial as it was the first time. You guys are great and I wish I could convince more of my peers to join and experience what I've felt that week. Thank you so much!

Renee Pendarvis

2015 Scholar's Speak Series - Chelsea Hannah

Prior to the visit to the YMI Cultural Center I was not realizing how important culture is to a person. While at the center i learned about culture and how important it is to keep this culture . This caught my interest and made me open my eyes to the actual history of our ancestors. The visit to the YMI Cultural Center in Asheville, NC was a great experience that i am happy i participated in. The speaker ,Sasha Mitchell, was very influential as to knowing and finding out about my culture. She gave a lot of information on how to find out about one's family history such as ancestry.com and familysearch.org. Listening to her speak about ancestry reminded me much about my mom who is my family's "historian" because she finds out all about my relatives. YMI stands Young Men's Institute which reminds me of the YMCA (Young Men's Christian Association) which is also a men's cultural outlet. My mother has found and passed down information about my great, great grandfather , Charles H. Bullock who organized and managed colored branches of the YMCA in different parts of the country. He organized and was the first executive secretary of YMCA's in Charlottesville, VA and Louisville, KY. He also organized the first colored branch of YMCA in Brooklyn,NY and directed a colored YMCA in Montclair, NJ. His name still lives on in Montclair as a public school is named after him. I am very proud of finding that someone in my family is tied this close to something this important, helping young black men grow and lead them to the road to success. The YMI Cultural Center was a great learning experience because i was able to greatly relate with everything said and made me appreciate my culture and its importance.

2015 Scholar's Speak Series - Nia Imani Mack

Founded in 1892 by Black leaders in the African-American community of Asheville, NC, the YMI Center is a place for Blacks to have meetings, discuss problems, and organize events for their neighborhood. The YMI Center is the first Black cultural center. Vanderbilt loaned money to the YMI Center in the early years of its construction. Negro Street is a place in Asheville, NC where Blacks did business and lived. Unfortunately there are far less Black owned businesses on Negro Street due to the Exodus Movement. The Exodus Movement of 1879 was the movement of Blacks from the South to the North after slavery ended, Blacks did this in hope for a better life. But, nonetheless, there were problems in both the North and South that had different hardships. Highways that cut through Negro Street are also a contributing factor for the loss of Black owned businesses.
William Trent and J.W. Walker (brothers) were the founders of the YMI Center. Dr. William J. Trent Sr. served his presidency at Livingstone College from 1925-1958. Floyd Bixler McKissick (who was also part of the YMI Center) was the first African-American student at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill's Law School. The YMI Center also had a small exhibit of famous African King posters including King Tutankhamun of Egypt who ruled as pharaoh in 1361-1352 B.C. Kind Tut was the 12th pharaoh of an 18 pharaoh Egyptian dynasty. King Tut's name directly translates to "Living Image of Aten".
Our speaker discussed with us the importance of HBCUs. HBCUs are supposed to mentor, uplift, and teach their students to be the best they can be. The speaker also stressed the importance of being active in the community and giving back. The speaker spoke about the A Score, which are students who desegregated Asheville, NC. The presenter talked about the New Jim Crow laws and how humiliating it was for people of color. The presenter told us that we (scholars) are more than our jobs because according to the U.S. census, it only says the name and job you had. Which could be a small part of someone's life.
The best advice that the presenter gave me was to go to familysearch.org. This website is ran by Mormons who photographed all the U.S. census reports throughout history and put them online. The public can access the website for free.
I am grateful that I was able to attend the presentation at the YMI Center because I do not get enough, not even a sufficient amount, of Black History at my school. I learned facts about my culture and people that I would've never found out if it wasn't shown to me. The amazing opportunity of going to the YMI Center and all the historically black places gave me a starting point to find out more about myself and my history as an aspiring successful black independent woman in the global marketing world.

School Visits 9 - 10 Claflin University and South Carolina State University & Field Trip Dr Mays Museum

Today has been the best day yet. The tour visited Claflin University, South Carolina State University, and the Dr. Benjamin E Mays Museum.

Claflin University

The students were greeted to a presentation at the James and Dorothy Z Elmore Chapel at Claflin University.  Included in the presentation were former NYC Omega Black College Tour (NYCOBCT) scholars, Athena Morgan and Victoria Burke, Claflin Class of 2017 and 2018 respectively.  Victoria was one of the tour guides from Claflin.  The students loved the campus particularly the recent construction.  We returned to the chapel to learn Chaquille Mitchell, Kasey Felix, Serica Samms, and Elaina Flint were accepted onsite into Claflin University.  We are proud of our NYCOBCT scholars and congratulate them on their acceptance.  We are also grateful to Mr. Zeigler and the staff at Claflin University for being a long standing friend to NYCOBCT.

South Carolina State University

Claflin University and South Carolina State University are adjoining campuses.  We were able to quickly walk 105 people to South Carolina State University.  We heard a wonderful presentation regarding South Carolina State University.  The admissions team was joined by the brothers of  Xi Psi chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc.  The brothers served as tour guides.  They did a wonderful job of explaining what the campus has to offer.  Upon conclusion of the tour, the brothers marched the NYCOBCT scholars to the admissions office where we learned, Dayvon Alford, Mia Ayala, Kasey Felix, Ashantee Hines, Jabari M'Bhaso, Jalen Prince, Danielle Raiford, Cayla Rosaria, Ciara Stewart, and Jordan Walker were all accepted into South Carolina State University.  After celebrating this wonderful news, the brothers of Xi Psi chapter performed a "Hop" (impromptu step show) for the scholars.  We then boarded the buses for the Dr. Benjamin E. Mays Museum.

Dr. Benjamin E Mays Museum

NYCOBCT were greeted by the museum's Site Director, Joseph Patton (Omega Man), Curator Loy Sartin, Willie Forest (Omega Man) and the men of Epsilon Gamma Gamma.  Each received a plaque commemorating their service to NYCOBCT.  Following the presentation the scholars were treated to a film, the original birthplace, and replica of the first school house of Dr Benjamin E. Mays.  All lead by Loy Sartin, Joseph Patton, and the brothers of Epsilon Gamma Gamma (E.G.G.).  The brothers of E.G.G. treated the scholars to a snack bag upon departure.

NYCOBCT ate at Golden Corral in Charlotte NC and settled into their hotel in Greensboro, NC.  We look forward to our school visits to Bennett College, North Carolina Agricultural & Technical State University, and Winston Salem State University visitations.

School Visit 6-8 of 15 and Sponsored Dinner

Today was a great day.  The scholars walked the hallow grounds of Morehouse, Spelman, and Clark Atlanta University today.

The male scholars appreciated walking the campus of Morehouse while the female scholars walked the campus of Spelman College.  At each campus the scholars were greeted by students who were alumni of the tour.  Both tour presentations did an excellent job of inspiring the students to consider "Spelhouse" (Morehouse & Spelman Colleges) for higher education.

After the Spelhouse tour, the scholars met at Clark Atlanta University (CAU) for a combined group tour. Five alumni of the NYCOBCT are currently enrolled at CAU.  They were apart of the CAU presentation. We are awaiting decisions on several applications submitted to CAU.

The tour visits was followed by a splendid dinner sponsored by Sam Kok and Lauretta Pierce at Green Ginger, an Asian fusion restaurant. in Decatur Ga.  Mr Kok annually opens his restaurant to NYCOBCT in support of our aspiring scholars.  In appreciation of Sam & Lauretta's generosity, NYCOBCT presented plaques as tokens of appreciation.

The NYCOBCT arrived safely to Orangeburg, SC.  The students are resting and eagerly await their tours to Claflin and South Carolina State Universities.

Day 3 Change of Plans

The day started with Fisk University, MeHarry Medical, and Tennessee State University being closed due to the weather conditions in middle and northern Tennessee.  We decided to get out of Nashville, quickly and head on to our next city, Atlanta, Ga.

The change in plans meant getting to Atlanta by 3:30pm as opposed to the 10:30pm originally scheduled.  Being in a hotel with 90 of my favorite scholars that long was not the plan.  The goal was to not be deterred by cancelled plans.  After making several calls, Jackie, one of the chaperons, came up with the idea of visiting the MLK center.  Perfect!  An educational facility, kill a few hours, and make up for the school cancellations.

The MLK center in Atlanta, was the perfect remedy.  The site of Dr. Martin Luther and Mrs. Coretta Scott King's memorial, Ebenzer Baptist Church, Visiting Center, and Freedom Hall, proved to be very educational, and kept the scholars engaged.

The scholars are relaxing in the hotel.  Curfew is at 11pm.

Tomorrow will bring, visits to Morehouse, Spelman, and Clark Atlanta University, along with a sponsored dinner to Green Ginger.
